natural history

Schiff’s landholdings are home to hundreds of plant and animal species. Some are common to the area, while others are quite rare. The mosaic of habitats found on these lands  offer these species a place to thrive and be discovered by our visitors. In addition, Schiff often hosts biologists and other scientists from around the state and the region who to pursue research projects that enhance our understanding of the fragile ecosystems in our area. From the stream seepages that feed into the North Branch of the Raritan River to our Great Meadow, our nature preserves  are  home to a varied, essential diversity of plants and wildlife.

We encourage you to explore these preserves to the  fullest while being respectful of the sensitive environments. One way to enhance your visit is to bring our species lists along with you so you can keep track of all that you see!
