RENT A NATURALIST
Generally curious about our preserve, its history, our plants, and the many animals that live on the preserve? Curious about the trees you've seen on your many hikes on the property? Our naturalist can answer those questions and more when you Rent a Naturalist for a one hour guided nature walk at Schiff Nature Preserve. Fees are $10 per person for a minimum of 5 people and a maximum of 20. Payment in full is required to confirm the reservation. Environmental Book Club

Schiff Nature Preserve offers members participation in an Environmental Book Club for FREE. Meet with other Schiff members eight times per year in the Nature Center for a friendly gathering to discuss a previously selected environmentally focused book together. Singing Bowl Meditation

Please join us for a sound healing meditation with exquisite Himalayan Singing Bowls, with galactic chimes, Koshi chimes, gentle gong, drum and more. Nourish your Body, Mind and Soul! Several protocols will be played to promote peace, relaxation, stress reduction, improved intuition and clarity of thought. Improving quality of sleep, raising our vibration, improving our relationships, aligning our energetic bodies and bringing more joy into our lives. Surrender into a bath of divine healing sound! Experience the vibration of the Himalayan Bowls on the body! Allow the sound to transport you into a tranquil and heavenly state of mind, body and soul! Bring all the props you need to either lay down or sit comfortably. We have chairs for those of you who prefer to sit. Wear comfortable clothes avoiding exposed buttons or zippers. Sunday Morning Fitness Hike

Join us for a brisk 5- mile hike over varied terrain across Schiff Nature Preserve. Hikers meet at McVickers Brook parking lot at 239 Pleasant Valley Road, Mendham. Vaccinated dogs on leash are welcome. Free to members. Non- member fee is $10. This program is an all weather event with the exception of severe weather. In the event of a cancellation, advance registration will ensure you receive a weather cancellation notice within 24 hours of the program start time. Advance registration and payment is required 24 hours in advance.

"Deer Santa": Celebrating the "Nature" of Christmas

Join in the magic of the holiday season as we share the joy of nature and enchantment of the animal world! Children will discover the differences between reindeer and the local white-tailed deer, learn about animals of the North Pole and what our wild neighbors are up to during this wintery holiday! Activities will include animal games of the North Pole, going on an "Evergreen" scavenger hunt in the woods to gather branches and pinecones that will be used to create a woodland scented "kindling kit" for the fireplace/firepit, and making "reindeer food" to sprinkle on the lawn Christmas Eve! This program is intended for children ages 3-6 years old (younger siblings welcome). Children must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. This program is an all-weather event so please dress accordingly. In the event of thunderstorms or extreme heat/cold/wind warnings the program will be cancelled. Member fee is $15 per child. Make Your Own Yule Log: A Winter Solstice Celebration

Burning of the yule log began as part of winter solstice festivities many, many years ago. Marking the shortest and darkest day of the year, the true beginning of winter was welcomed. Over time, this celebration has continued by using natural materials to decorate a log to burn on winter solstice, Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve. If you enjoy learning about old-fashioned traditions and decorating with nature, please join us for a festive night making your own yule log to burn or decorate your home with. This program will be held inside the Nature Center. All materials will be provided. Festive music and light refreshments will be enjoyed! Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Member fee is $35. Non- member fee is $40 per child.

Winter Solstice Celebration

Join us as we say goodbye to autumn and welcome in the winter season on this longest night of the year. We will take an easy walk to the highest point at Schiff where you will hear tales of Winter Solstice traditions from around the world. The walk will be followed by a solstice fire, bringing light into the darkest of days. This program is appropriate for those age 6 and above and is an all weather event, so dress accordingly. In the event of a thunderstorm or extreme wind warning program will be cancelled. Advance registration required. S'mores packets will be provided, please advise us of any allergies upon registration. Flashlights recommended. All ages. Member fee is $10/person. Non- member fee is $15/person. Limited to 25 guests.

Volunteer Work Session
Schiff Natural Lands Trust & Schiff Nature Preserve

The Conservation and Stewardship Committee welcomes your involvement in maintaining our trails, open space, and buildings. Meet at the Nature Center for two hours of land stewardship work. Each work session provides the community an opportunity to work side by side with Schiff staff and Board members in a variety of hands-on projects. Depending on the season, we may be clearing trails, removing invasive species, planting native trees and shrubs, conducting building repairs, restoring fences and bridges, or raking out the Native Garden. Volunteers (16 and under with a parent) are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, bring sunscreen and bug spray as appropriate, and bring a beverage and snack in a backpack for hands free walking. Bring garden or work gloves. Tools provided by Schiff. Volunteers are asked to sign a waiver and may bring and use their own tools if they prefer. Please pre-register online so we can plan projects accordingly.

Final Full Moon Hike of 2023

Night hikes provide us with an all together different experience. Schiff's Full Moon Hikes are an excellent opportunity to see our beautiful landscape by the light of the moon. Discover the magic of hiking at night while the moon is at its fullest, when even the most familiar trails reveal sights and sounds, they only share with the cool, quiet night. This 2 mile, 1 ½ hour hike is perfect for those age 6 and older, but guests should feel comfortable walking on uneven terrain. Guests are advised to wear hiking boots, weather appropriate attire, and bring headlamps to have on hand. Member fee is $10 per person. Non-member fee is $15 per person. Please, no pets are permitted on this hike. This is an all weather event with the exception of extreme weather and high winds. These walks are very popular, so early, advance registration and payment are required to confirm your place.
